De Blasio Signs JFK Business District Bill

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday signed legislation authorizing the creation of the Greater JFK Business Improvement District.

The City Council approved the JFK measure last month.

The district, in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens borough adjacent to John F. Kennedy International Airport, is mostly industrial and mixed-use with warehouses and cargo businesses dominating a smaller residential neighborhood.

"The BID will be a strong local advocate for the district that can help to address the unique challenges faced by the area's local businesses and residents, while helping to better connect them to the city's workforce development and business development programs," de Blasio said in a statement.

Borough President Melinda Katz called the airport a key driver of the Queens economy. "The creation of the [district] will help unlock the airport's economic full potential as a job creator and a business multiplier for our borough," she said.

The Greater JFK District Management Association Inc. will manage the district with a $500,000 annual budget.
