Atlanta Streetcar Seeks Director

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Atlanta Streetcar is conducting a national search for an executive director.

The new director of the project will replace Tim Borchers, who resigned May 8.

The 2.7-mile, east-west downtown route with 12 stops opened last year. Fares on the system are free through 2015.

The city named Keith Jones as interim executive director. Jones most recently worked at AECOM/URS Corp. as transit/rail department manager for the gulf coast region.

Ozell Hayes was named interim director of safety, security and training.

"The Atlanta Streetcar is committed to being a national leader in the transit industry, and I am confident that with two new leaders in place, the Streetcar will continue to provide riders with a safe, comfortable and convenient experience," said Atlanta's interim chief operating Officer Kristin Wilson.

The east-west route, which is the first phase of the project, cost $69.2 million.

Funding came from a $47.6 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Act II grant, $15.6 million from the city, and $6 million from the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District.

The improvement district will contribute a total of $20 million over 20 years.
