Preliminary August U. of Mich. Index at 79.2 vs. 81.8 in July

The University of Michigan's preliminary August consumer sentiment index reading was 79.2, compared to the final July 81.8, and the preliminary July 81.3, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 66.2, compared to the final July 71.8, and the preliminary July 71.1.

The current conditions index was 99.6, compared to the final July 97.4, and the preliminary July 97.1.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 82.5 reading for the main index, 97.8 for current conditions and 73.0 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.7% in July, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.4%, compared to 3.3% in July.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
