Combs: Sales Tax Booming

Texas sales tax revenues exceeded $2 billion again in February, Comptroller Susan Combs said last week.

She reported total collections of $2.01 billion.

The comptroller attributed the revenue increase of almost 15% from February 2011 to increased oil and gas exploration and production activity in south and west Texas.

Consumer sectors such as retail and dining continue to grow as well, she said.

Local governments will receive $473.6 million of February sales tax collections, an increase of 9.3% from February 2011

The state will distribute $312.7 million to cities, up from $289.5 million last year.

The top recipients include Houston, which will receive $41.1 million, San Antonio, which will get $16.7 million, and Dallas, which will get $16.5 million.

Counties will share $31.4 million, while special districts will receive a total of $22.9 million.

Ten transit districts will receive a total of $106.6 million.
