N.Y.C.’s No-Waste Hotline

New York City Comptroller John Liu has launched (212)NO-WASTE, a hotline for city employees, contractors, and members of the public to report wasteful spending by city agencies.

Workers in the comptroller’s community action center are staffing the hotline, which Liu unveiled during his state of the city address two weeks ago. He said the initiative will help build on the nearly $1 billion in wasteful spending his office has identified over the past two years.

In the coming months, the comptroller also plans to implement: Checkbook 2.0, a website that will make public every dollar the city spends, as well as each agency’s budget, revenue and contracts; New York City IT Dashboard, which would require city agencies to track their information technology projects according to budget, schedule and performance; and a subcontractor tracking system, based on a federal model.

Liu said it will force big city contractors to be accountable for the performance of subcontractors, enforce prompt payment policies, and more accurately track actual spending with minority and women-owned businesses.
