Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman was re-sentenced last week to 78 months in prison for bribery, conspiracy, fraud and obstruction of justice.
Siegelman was convicted by a federal jury in a 2006 case involving Richard Scrushy, former chief executive officer of HealthSouth.
Siegelman began serving an 88-month sentence but was released after nine months on bond pending an appeal in 2008, in which all charges were upheld except two counts of honest services mail fraud. The remaining counts against him were also upheld by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the appellate decision.
Siegelman was charged with selling Scrushy a seat on the state regulatory board governing HealthSouth.
In return, Scrushy paid $500,000 in donations to a failed Siegelman campaign in 1999 to establish a state lottery. Scrushy has served his sentence.
