The cancellation of a project to renovate the 70-year-old Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and a connecting portion of the Gowanus Expressway, both part of Interstate 278 in New York City, has prompted calls for a state law allowing public private partnerships.
State Sens. Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, and Martin Golden, R-Brooklyn, are sponsoring legislation that would allow the use of public-private partnerships.
“Abandoning [the BQE’s] rehabilitation is totally unacceptable,” Golden said in a statement.
The New York Department of Transportation cited funding concerns in pulling out of the project, which would have enhanced access to and from the elevated highway in downtown Brooklyn.
