Treasurer Loses Latest Bid

Nevada Treasurer Kate Marshall lost her special election bid for Congress in Tuesday.

Mark Amodei, a former state legislator and ex-state Republican chairman, took 57% of the vote to the Democratic Marshall’s 37% with 71% of precincts reporting, according to Roll Call.

Marshall had been considered a long-shot to win in Nevada’s most Republican congressional district.

The election was called to replace  Dean Heller following his appointment to the U.S. Senate after John Ensign resigned over a sex scandal.

This was Nevada’s first special House election, and the ground rules were unclear.

Both parties brought lawsuits before the race, but the state Supreme Court sided with the GOP.

The court’s decision allowed the major state parties to each nominate one candidate.

Democrats had hoped for a free-for-all format in the hopes that multiple Republicans would split the vote, making it possible for Marshall to win with a plurality, according to Roll Call.

Marshall, who has served as state treasurer since 2007, will retain her position.
