Texas sales tax collections totaled $1.98 billion in August, the highest monthly total in three years, Comptroller Susan Combs said last week.
The state will distribute $483.9 million of the August sales tax revenue to local governments.
August marked the 17th straight month of year-to-year increases, she said. August revenues were 12% higher than the $1.77 billion collected in August 2010.
“For the state’s recently concluded 2011 fiscal year, sales tax revenue increased 9.4% from the previous fiscal year,” Combs said.
The state collected $41 billion in sales tax revenues over the fiscal 2010-2011 biennium, the comptroller’s office said, down from the $44.4 billion predicted earlier.
Sales tax revenues account for more than half of Texas’ general fund budget.
