Tuition Bond Bill Filed

Texas Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, has proposed legislation that would allow three state schools in San Antonio to issue $223 million of debt supported by tuition revenues to finance new facilities.

Villarreal’s measure, House Bill 134, would authorize the University of Texas at San Antonio to issue $92 million of bonds for an experimental science building and would allow the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to issue $61 million for a an academic center at the campus and a diabetes center in Laredo. Texas A&M-San Antonio would issue $70 million for  classroom facilities.

If the measure is approved by the Legislature, the schools would be responsible for supporting the principal through tuition revenue and the state would support the interest costs.
