Former Bond Buyer reporter Stephen A. Davies died of cancer on Nov. 8.
For The Bond Buyer, Mr. Davies covered economics, monetary policy, and financial markets, including the Congress, the White House, and the Federal Reserve.
“Steve was one of the finest journalists I have had the pleasure to work with,” said Chip Barnett, executive editor of Thomson Reuters Municipal News. “He was supremely professional — fast, accurate, and to the point in his reporting. [He] knew what was important to muni market professionals.”
Born in Scranton, Pa., Mr. Davies moved with his family to Milwaukee at a young age. The family moved to Beirut, Lebanon, in 1962, where his father was assigned by the United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Davies graduated from Dartmouth College in 1969, served two years with the U.S. Army, and then attended University of Michigan, where he earned master’s degrees in modern Arabic and journalism.
He returned to Beirut in 1975 to report on the outbreak of the civil war.
In 1976, Mr. Davies moved to northern Virginia and began a career as a business journalist. In 1996, he relocated to Pelham, N.Y., to work as the morning editor for CNN-fn. In 1998, he became a marketing writer with the consulting firm of Towers Watson.
Mr. Davies was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the Pelham Civics, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
“He’ll be sorely missed,” Barnett said of Mr. Davies, who he recalled as “an outstanding individual who would take time out from his busy schedule to show new reporters the ropes.”
Mr. Davies is survived by his wife of 34 years, Joanne Hawkins Davies, his son, Philip, and his daughter, Justine. He is also survived by his mother Nancy, his brother Philip, and his sister, Elizabeth McDonald.
A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham Manor on Nov. 13, followed by interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers, N.Y.
The family asks that donations be made to American Near East Refugee Aid or the Pelham Civic Association Community Awards Program.
