Sales Tax Allocations Up

Texas sales tax collections in July totaled $1.7 billion, up 2.2% from July 2009, with increases posted by the retail, construction, and oil and gas sectors.

"Total monthly sales tax revenue has now exceeded year-ago levels for the last four months," said state Comptroller Susan Combs. "We are monitoring these sectors to see if collections are returning to consistent growth."

The state will distribute $556.3 million of the July collections to local governments this week, up 2.3% from a year ago. Allocations so far in 2010 are down 2.5%. Cities will receive a total of $375.5 million, up 2.2% from last year. Houston will receive $45.7 million, Dallas $20.7 million, and San Antonio $20.2 million.

Year-to-date allocations to Texas cities trail 2009 by 2.2%.

Counties will receive $33.7 million from July sales tax revenue, almost the same as in 2009. County allocations this year are down 5.6% from a year ago.

Ten transit districts will share $123.5 million of August allocations. A total of $23.5 million will be distributed among 169 special-purpose taxing districts.
