Tax Bill for Floating Casino

Gary officials have said the Indiana Gaming Commission should delay renewing a local casino’s license because it owes nearly $22 million in unpaid property taxes.

City officials said that the Majestic Star Casino, which owns two floating casinos, owes the city $21.9 million in property taxes.

The casino’s owners, who declared bankruptcy last year, are appealing the assessment. The value of the floating casinos rose to $110 million in 2006 from $49 million in 2005, according to a report in the Post-Tribune of Northwest Indiana.

City officials say the casino should have to pay the taxes before the state Gaming Commission decides whether to renew its licenses.
