Determining Recession’s End Is Premature: Panel

It is too soon to determine the end of the recession, the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research said yesterday.

After reviewing the latest data for all relevant indicators to determine a possible date of the trough in economic activity marking the end of the recession that began in December 2007, the panel decided that the determination of the trough date on the basis of current data would be premature.

The committee noted that the indicators had generally improved.

Later in the day, Martin S. Feldstein, NBER president emeritus, said in a televised interview that while the odds are the economy will continue expanding, there is still the possible risk of a double-dip recession.
