Provisional ballots to be counted today may determine Atlanta’s next mayor.
At the polls Tuesday, voters cast 50.46% of their ballots for Kasim Reed, who stepped down as a Georgia state senator to run for mayor, while City Council member Mary Norwood captured 49.54% of the vote.
Election officials said they have approximately 700 provisional ballots, but the total number of those that will count depends on those voters providing proper identification by today’s deadline.
The winner will replace Mayor Shirley Franklin, who could not run again due to term limits. Franklin, Atlanta’s first woman mayor, was first elected in 2001. She was reelected in 2005.
