Voters in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Tuesday rejected a school bond measure as well as a plan to trade some property tax levies for a new sales tax.
The $31.7 school bond measure was defeated with about 52% of voters saying “no,” according to unofficial results released by the borough’s election office.
The tax measure would have lowered property taxes to a 7.3 mill rate from the current 9.98, replacing lost revenue with a new 3% sales tax.
The borough Assembly placed the tax measure on the ballot by overriding Mayor Talis Colburg’s veto.
The vast majority of the borough’s voters agreed with the mayor, with more than 77% voting against the measure.
