Water Damage Widespread

Atlanta officials last week said a preliminary assessment showed 474 homes were affected by recent flooding and approximately 1,900 residents sought some level of federal assistance.

City officials were still assessing damages to municipal facilities, including roads, bridges, recreation centers, and wastewater facilities, but early estimates pegged damages, overtime, and fuel costs at $61.2 million.

The largest cost was reported by the city’s Department of Watershed Management, which estimated $52.2 million in expenses largely related to the loss of one wastewater treatment facility and water main breaks due to the deluge.

Georgia officials said the storms caused an estimated $500 million in damage to 20,000 homes and other structures in the state, which has received a federal disaster declaration for eight counties.
