Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Jim Aloisi announced Friday that he will step down from his post by Nov. 1, the same time that a new bonding authority, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, will begin overseeing most surface transportation systems throughout the state.
Aloisi became transportation secretary in January. He did not explain why he is not seeking to remain head of the state’s transportation systems.
“Today Secretary James A. Aloisi informed the governor’s office that he does not wish to be considered a candidate for the position of secretary/chief executive officer of MassDOT, effective Nov. 1, 2009,” according to a prepared statement released by the Executive Office of Transportation.
“Accordingly, Secretary Aloisi’s last day will be Oct. 31, 2009. In the coming weeks and months, he looks forward to continuing his work with the dedicated employees of our state’s transportation agencies and authorities to implement the landmark transportation reforms signed into law earlier this year by Gov. Deval Patrick.”
While MassDOT’s new secretary will oversee most surface transportation entities throughout the state — including Massachusetts’ two main toll roads and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which provides public transit throughout the greater Boston area — the secretary will not sit on MassDOT’s five-member board.
As transportation secretary, Aloisi currently chairs the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority board. MassPike will cease to exist at midnight on Oct. 31.
