Wichita Facing Layoffs

Wichita officials said 100 positions may be eliminated in the fiscal 2010 budget due to declines in sales and property tax revenue and increases in health insurance costs.

Preliminary figures indicate the city may have a $13 million deficit next year and a $17.5 million gap in fiscal 2011.

Wichita is considering a plan to privatize parks maintenance that would reduce its workforce by 65 employees.

A hiring freeze by the city has been in place since January.
