St. John Readies Vote

The St. John the Baptist Parish Council has set July 19 as the special election date for a $25 million bond issue. Voters will also be asked to renew a property tax that provides $125,000 a year for the parish’s mosquito-abatement program.

The bonds will be supported with existing property taxes and will not require a tax increase.

The proposed bond package allocates $9.5 million for drainage canals, pumps and pumping plants, and levees, $5 million for expanding the parish governmental complex, $5 million for water system improvements, $3 million for roads, and $2.5 million for parks and recreation.

Parish voters approved an $18 million bond package in 2002.
