San Antonio public utility CPS Energy is adding 75 megawatts of wind energy under a 15-year agreement with Portland, Ore.-based PPM Energy.
PPM expects to complete the Penascal Wind Fall just south of Baffin Bay on the Texas Gulf Coast by December. The new source will provide CPS a total of 575 megawatts of wind power, officials said. The new generation will be capable of powering 17,500 homes.
The utility aims to generate 15% of its peak load from renewable energy by 2020.
In addition to renewable energy, CPS is building a bond-financed coal plant and is joining in the application for the first U.S. nuclear permit in 29 years. The city utility is a joint partner with investor-owed NRG Energy and Austin in the South Texas Project, a nuclear power plant in Matagorda County seeking to add two more reactors to its existing pair.
