Ohio’s Republican-led House last week blocked a bill to give bond-funded bonuses to veterans of recent wars, saying the measure relied on too much debt.
After passing unanimously in the Democrat-controlled Senate, the bill stalled in the House after House Majority Leader Jon Husted said he opposed the idea of using bonds to pay for bonuses. State Treasurer Richard Cordray, who is running for attorney general Nov. 4, proposed the measure.
It calls for a $200 million bond issue to be put on the November ballot. Proceeds from the bonds would provide bonuses of up to $1,000 for military personnel and up to $5,000 for families of military personnel killed in the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War or in the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
