Consumer Sentiment Index Rises to 80.5

The University of Michigan’s preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 80.5 compared to the final December reading of 75.5 and the 74.5 reading earlier in December, according to market sources.

Economists polled by IFR Markets had predicted a 74.7 reading for the index.

The expectations index was 69.1, compared to 65.6 last month, 63.2 at mid-December. The current conditions index was 98.1, compared to 91.0 in December, and 92.1 in mid-December.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
