Valencia named Nixon Peabody partner as her role expands

Angelica Valencia, a public finance and project finance attorney at Nixon Peabody, has been named a partner.

Valencia works in the Los Angeles office. She is a member of the firm's public finance and project finance team, comprised of 46 attorneys.

Public finance attorney Angelica Valencia was elevated to partner at Nixon Peabody in 2019.

She was the only public finance attorney promoted to partner by the firm among the 12 elevated this year.

“Angelica is an integral part of our California and Puerto Rico practices, as well as our national transportation and P3 teams, with leadership experience in each of those practice groups,” said Ken Lind, head of Nixon Peabody’s Project Finance and Public Finance group.

Her practice focuses on work as bond counsel and underwriter’s counsel on financings involving multifamily housing projects, utilities, transportation, nonprofits, higher education and student loans.

She acts as bond counsel to a number of different agencies in Puerto Rico on bond sales and other financings.

She also works on the team that provides counsel to the Build America Bureau, an umbrella organization within the U.S. Department of Transportation overseeing such financing programs as the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act, the Rail Rehabilitation and Improvement Loan program, and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America and private activity bond programs.

The bureau operates as the single point of contact and coordination for states, municipalities and project sponsors looking to use federal transportation expertise, apply for federal transportation credit programs and explore ways to access private capital in public private partnerships.

Lind said Valencia is assuming an expanding role with some of the firm's most important clients and complex projects.

“We congratulate her on this career milestone,” Lind said.

Most of Valencia's nine-year legal career has been at Nixon Peabody, aside from a short time volunteering at Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law firm in the nation, she said.

“It’s an honor to be promoted to partner,” said Valencia, who added her approach is to be forward thinking, so she can anticipate the challenges her clients will face.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of California and her law degree at the New York University School of Law.
