U. of Mich. Sept. Index at 57.8 vs. 55.7 in Aug.

NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's preliminary September consumer sentiment index reading was 57.8, compared to the final August 55.7, the preliminary August 54.9, and the final July 63.7, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 47.0, compared to 47.4 in August, 45.7 earlier in August, and 56.0 in July.

The current conditions index was 74.5, compared to 68.7 in August, 69.3 earlier in August, and 75.8 in July.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 56.5 reading for the main index, 68.0 for current conditions and 47.5 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 3.0% compared to 2.9% in August, 2.9% in July, and 3.0% in June, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.7%, compared to 3.5% in August, 3.4% in July, and 3.8% in June.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
