NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's preliminary August consumer sentiment index reading was 69.6, compared to the final July 67.8, the preliminary July 66.5, and the final June 76.0, according to market sources.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 67.0 reading for the index.
The expectations index was 64.1, compared to 62.3 in July, 60.6 earlier in July, and 69.8 in June.
The current conditions index was 78.3, compared to 76.5 in July, 75.5 earlier in July, and 85.6 in June.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 76.5 reading for the current conditions index and 63.7 for the expectations index.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.9% in July, 2.9% earlier in July, and 2.8% in June, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.7% in July, 2.9% earlier in July, and 2.8% in June.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
