Beginning on Jan. 4, 2010, Atkinson will head up the West Coast infrastructure group and serve as a managing director at the firm.

Atkinson’s career in public finance began in 1975 when he joined Shearson Hayden Stone. His long career also includes a management position at Salomon Brothers during its heyday in the 1980s, and after joining PaineWebber in 1987 he was instrumental in reorganizing the firm’s municipal operations into one single unit.

Atkinson, who also served as chairman of the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board in 1997-98, was honored in 2005 for his career accomplishments by the Municipal Forum of New York.

Morgan Stanley said managing director John Sheldon will continue to focus on major accounts in California, working closely with Atkinson as they expand the muni business and increase their banking footprint on the West Coast.
