"I have informed the Rhode Island Republican Party of my intention to seek the Party's nomination," Taylor said June 10 in a brief statement. "I have also informed Gov. [Lincoln] Chafee of my intention to step down as the director of the Division of Elderly Affairs."

Taylor, a Republican, said she would officially launch her campaign once she leaves the office that she served since January 2011. In 2010, she narrowly lost the election for secretary of state to Democrat Ralph Mollis, 50.6% to 49.4%.

In Rhode Island, the lieutenant governor's position is filled in an election independent of the governor's race.
