Take Some Unpaid Days Off

Idaho will force some workers to take unpaid furloughs over the holidays to save money, as revenues continue to disappoint.

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter ordered state agencies to cut spending by 1% in September, warning that the state faced a $174 million revenue shortfall in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. He’s already warned that cuts as high as 4% may be needed to keep the budget in balance.

The state attorney general and Department of Agriculture will send home workers home without pay for two days during the Christmas holiday season.

“This is a good management style, as far as I’m concerned,” Gov. Otter told the Statesman Review in Spokane, Wash. “They’re taking two days out of the year … where there’s precious little activity.”
