According to Stringer, the unit draws upon the audit, contracts, budget and policy divisions of the comptroller's office to hold government accountable in the city's rebuilding from the Oct. 29, 2012 storm.

Stringer and deputy comptrollers will hear testimony, take suggestions for audit topics and identify parts of the recovery effort that need scrutiny and improvement.

The unit will review and audit Sandy spending and programs, including a recently announced audit of the Build it Back program, identify areas to strengthen performance, avert fraud and waste, and recommend how to improve the rebuilding process.
