The index average over the past 40 years is 98, including readings from the Great Recession. "The Index is still a few points shy of the pre-Great Recession average (1974-2007)," the group noted.

The index peaked at 107.7 in November 2004 and hit a low of 81.0 in March 2009.

"The entire gain in the Index was accounted for by two components: Expectations for Business Conditions in Six Months and Expectations for Real Sales Volumes, adding a combined 21 percentage points to net favorable responses, perhaps a response to the November election results," NFIB said in a release.
