Scott W. Farrar, vice president and head of fixed-income sales for State Street Corp.'s securities trading division in Boston, died Monday following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 38.
Mr. Farrar joined State Street in 1991 from Chase Securities in New York, where he had worked since 1987 and served as vice president of the municipal bond desk with responsibility for sales and trading of general market municipal bonds to major institutions. Prior to joining Chase, he worked in a similar capacity for Advest Inc. in Boston.
Using what State Street colleagues called his magnetic personality and "incredible spark," Mr. Farrar significantly deepened the division's distribution capabilities.
Under his direction, State Street's short-term tax-exempt derivative program, called Clipper, grew to over $2 billion. He was also instrumental in the success of State Street's latest underwriting niche, private secondary school bonds.
A star running back in high school football, he won a 1979 athletic scholarship to Villanova University, where he was known as "Flash Farrar" and developed a passion for rugby, which he continued to play for the better part of two decades.
"He lived life to the fullest and never wasted a day," said State Street colleague Drew Schneller.
He is survived by his wife Elena Farrar, his parents Ross Farrar and Nancy Wilford, brothers John and Chris, and grandmother Mary Farrar.
A funeral will be held today at 9 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main Street (Rt. 38) in Winchester, Mass., followed at 10 a.m. by a funeral mass at St. Mary's Church. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
Donations in Mr. Farrar's memory may be made to the Scott William Farrar Athletics Fund at Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, c/o B.G.C.B., 50 Congress Street, Suite 730, Boston, MA 02109.
