Voters in Revere, Mass., approved a $1.3 billion proposal by Mohegan Sun that will compete with Wynn Resorts for the Greater Boston resort casino license.
According to referendum results posted by Revere election officials, 63% backed the casino plan at the site of Suffolk Downs horse racing track.
Suffolk Downs straddles Revere and Boston's East Boston neighborhood, but while Revere approved an earlier plan last fall, East Boston voted it down. Caesars Entertainment had backed the earlier proposal.
Steve Wynn's namesake company has proposed a 29-acre resort along the Mystic River in nearby Everett, on a contaminated former Monsanto Chemical site.
State lawmakers in 2011 approved three regional casino resorts in Massachusetts, strategically placed amid a crowded Northeast gambling market.
