The University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer sentiment index reading was 88.6, compared to the final April 95.9, and the preliminary April 95.9, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 81.5, compared to the final April 88.8 and the preliminary April 88.0.
The current conditions index was 99.8, compared to the final April 107.0, and the preliminary April 108.2.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 96.0 reading for the main index, 107.0 for current conditions, and 88.6 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.6% in April, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.6% in April.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
