The University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer sentiment index reading was 81.8, compared to the final April 84.1, and the preliminary April 82.6, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 73.2, compared to 74.7 in the final April, and 73.3 in the preliminary April.
The current conditions index was 95.1, compared to 98.7 in the final April, and 97.1 in the preliminary April.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 84.5 reading for the main index, 99.0 for current conditions and 75.0 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.9% in April, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.2%, compared to 3.2% in April.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
