The University of Michigan's preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 98.2, compared to the final December 93.6 and the preliminary December 93.8, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 91.6, compared to the final December 86.4 and the preliminary December 86.1.
The current conditions index was 108.3, compared to the final December 104.8 and the preliminary December 105.7.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 94.1 reading for the main index, 105.4 for current conditions, and 87.0 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.8% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.4%, compared to 2.8% in December.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
