The University of Michigan's preliminary December consumer sentiment index reading was 93.8, compared to the final November 88.8, and the preliminary November 89.4, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 86.1, compared to the final November 79.9, and the preliminary November 80.6.
The current conditions index was 105.7, compared to the final November 102.7, and the preliminary November 103.0.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 89.5 reading for the main index, 101.4 for current conditions, and 80.5 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.6% in November, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.8% in November.
