XL Capital Ltd yesterday named Michael Rego as executive vice president and chief operating officer of XL Financial Assurance, XL Capital's Bermuda-based financial guaranty reinsurer that derives most its business from financial guaranty affiliate, XL Capital Assurance Inc. Rego succeeds James McNichols, who was appointed as XL's global chief actuary in April.
"A native Bermudian who moved to London four years ago [and] successfully established XLCA in London," Rego will return to Bermuda where he'll be "responsible for the day-to-day affairs" of triple-A rated XLFA, according to a statement by Robert Lusardi, chief executive of XL's financial products and services operations.
Rego was previously the chief operating officer of XL Capital Assurance U.K., the London-based subsidiary of triple-A financial guarantor, XL Capital Assurance.
Rego joined XL in 1997 as a specialty financial lines underwriter before moving to the structured finance group. Before XL, he was at the Bank of Bermuda.
Replacing Rego as chief operating officer of XLCA-UK is Frederick Hnat, XLCA's former general counsel. Hnat joined XLCA from MBIA Insurance Corp., where he was assistant general counsel. Hnat's appointment is pending approval by the U.K.'s Financial Services Authority.
