Peck Picks Olson as Tax, Financial Analysis Head

CHICAGO — Cincinnati-based public finance law firm Peck, Shaffer & Williams LLP has tapped bond counsel veteran Carol Olson to head up the firm’s tax and financial analysis group.

The move comes after the group’s former head Bruce Agin left the firm to join Ice Miller LLP’s Chicago office.

Olson has worked at Peck Shaffer since 1993, the firm said.

She has focused on federal taxation issues for the last 35 years, with a special emphasis on federal income tax requirements for municipal bonds, industrial development bonds, housing bonds, and compliance with arbitrage restrictions, according to the firm.

Olson will oversee the firm’s eight-member tax and financial analysis group in Cincinnati.

“Carol’s in-depth knowledge of federal tax law makes her a significant resource on tax issues,” said Dirk M. Bedarff, managing partner of Peck Shaffer, in a prepared statement. “We are delighted to have someone with her experience leading the department.”

Olson, who was unavailable for comment yesterday, said in a statement she was excited to head up the group, adding that it was known throughout the public finance industry for its depth and experience.

Peck Shaffer in 2009 ranked as the second-highest ranked bond counsel in Ohio and the first in Kentucky, according to the firm.

The firm last year ranked sixth in the Midwest, down from third in 2008, according to Thomson Reuters.

Peck, Shaffer & Williams aid it ranked 18th in the nation in 2008 for combined total dollar volume when serving as bond counsel or underwriter’s counsel, with a total dollar volume of over $6.27 billion in 2009.

The law firm has offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Covington, Ky., and Denver. It employs 82 professionals, of whom 43 are public finance attorneys and 39 are administrative and staff positions.
