Offshoot District Eyes $100M

Trustees of the new Central Community school system, which split off from the East Baton Rouge Parish school district last year, have proposed a $100 million bond issue supported by increases in the parish sales tax and property tax.

Voters will be asked to consider an increase in the sales tax to 2.5% from 2% and an undetermined increase in the property tax rate. No date has been set for the election.

The bond proceeds would be used to build a school complex on a 120-acre site that would consolidate and replace the district’s high school, middle school, and two elementary schools.

The district said the single-site complex would be less expensive than rebuilding the schools, and would meet its needs through 2012. Enrollment is expected to increase by 2,000 students over the next four years with the scheduled closing of a large private school in the district.

Plans call for the complex to be completed in five phases.
