The College of New Jersey broke ground on a new science, technology, engineering and math building, financed in part by the Garden State's $750 million Building Our Future Bond Act.
The public college in Ewing Township, N.J. held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 7 for the new 88,000 square-foot building that is the centerpiece of a larger $94 million STEM complex providing expanded lab and classroom space for the School of Science and the School of Engineering. The state's larger project aims to add a total of 111,000 square feet in new high-tech laboratory and classroom space to TCNJ's campus.
New Jersey appropriated roughly $57 million from the $750 million Building Our Future Bond Act to TCNJ in May 2013 for STEM-related projects. Of this amount, $47 million has been directed to the new STEM complex with the remaining $10 million being used for upgrades of existing technology and computer infrastructure.
"Investments in STEM and research-related facilities like these are exactly what will drive New Jersey's economy forward," said New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, who sponsored the Building Our Future Bond Act approved in 2012. "This building will serve the faculty and students of TCNJ for decades to come and will pay economic dividends to our state."
