New Tax Chief

New Jersey Treasurer Andrew Eristoff last week announced that Michael Bryan will become director of the Division of Taxation.

Bryan, who has more than 20 years of tax experience, will head a department that collected nearly $25 billion of revenue in fiscal 2009, which ended on June 30, 2009.

He will oversee a staff of 1,300 employees that manage 40 different taxes and fees.

Bryan recently was a senior director for tax audits and international tax for communications firm Comcast Corp. in Philadelphia, where he worked on tax disagreements and oversaw Comcast’s centralized records management.

“His experience in handling tax and audit issues both from the government and private client perspective will be particularly valuable as he manages the division’s interactions with taxpayers,” Eristoff said in a statement.

Bryan, a lifelong resident of New Jersey, has worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Philadelphia as a revenue agent conducting field examinations.

He also worked at Coopers & Lybrand, now a part of PricewaterhouseCoopers, assisting clients with tax and audit issues.

He is a certified public accountant and received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Drexel University. He holds a Master of Science degree in taxation from Temple University.
