New Hospital Advances

A plan to build a new hospital advanced last week when the Merrick County Board of Supervisors approved a plan by Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital to build a new $25 million facility and a $9 million long-term care facility.

The new buildings would be financed with revenue bonds backed by hospital revenue. Voters would need to approve the borrowing. Officials plan to put it on the  ballot later this year or early 2011.

Voters rejected a $4 million bond issue in 2001 for renovations at the existing facilities, now nearly 55 years old.
