NEW YORK -- Moody’s Investors Service said it placed the following 142 Aaa-rated local housing finance agency transactions on Watchlist for possible downgrade, following the downgrade of American International Group, Inc.'s (AIG) long-term rating to A2 on Watchlist for possible downgrade from Aa3, and placement of its short-term rating of P-1 on Watchlist for possible downgrade.
All of these issues have exposure to AIG through Guaranteed Investment Contracts (GICs), and may be subject to 1) increased principal repayment risk as a result of the reduced credit quality of AIG and 2) the risk that, in the event the GIC is replaced, the new interest rate from the replacement investment will not be high enough to support debt service on the bonds.
Over the next several weeks, Moody's will review the affected issues and take appropriate rating action as necessary.
