Luis A. Aguilar, a former partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP in Atlanta, was sworn in as a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday and began his first day of work.
Aguilar, a Democrat whose practice focused on public and private offerings, mutual funds, investment advisers, broker-dealers, corporate governance, and other areas of federal and state securities laws and rules, replaces Roel Campos and will serve a term that expires June 5, 2010.
He is one of three new SEC members: Elisse Walter, a Democrat and former senior executive vice president of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, came aboard July 9; and Troy Paredes, a Republican and securities professor at Washington University in St. Louis, who is expected to be sworn in at the end of this month.
Aguilar served as an SEC staff attorney from April 1979 to January 1982. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Georgia Southern University in 1976, his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1979, and a master of laws degree in taxation from Emory University in 1985.
