The previous record was $429.1 billion in 2007.

The figures are based on competitive, negotiated, and privately placed sales of municipal bonds maturing in at least 13 months.

The record was achieved with the help of a historic $151.9 billion of taxable municipal bonds, nearly twice the $84.7 billion taxable volume for 2009. Build America Bonds accounted for $117.5 billion, or 77%, of the taxable total.
