Liu: Latinos Need Capital

Hispanics are among the most potent market forces in the American economy, yet inadequate access to capital constrains them, New York City Comptroller John Liu said at a banking conference last week.

“Latino businesses are growing faster than the population in terms of revenues,” Liu said at the 114th annual Wall Street Summit, a conference at the Walford Astoria Hotel sponsored by the Latino group New America Alliance.

“If we want to make government more effective in serving its people and more representative in selecting its business partners, we have to give everyone a fair shot to show what he or she can do,” he said.

Also last week, Liu and Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an overhaul of city pension fund governance.

The proposal — which calls for merging five pension funds into one board with an overseer — needs approval from the state Legislature.
