Lehman Bros. Hires Former Merrill Banker

Former Merrill Lynch & Co. managing director Christian W. McCarthy will join the public finance department at Lehman Brothers tomorrow, focusing primarily on short-term deals from municipal and corporate issuers, according to Gary Killian, Lehman's co-head of municipal finance with James B.G. Hearty.

McCarthy, who will report to Killian and Hearty, is filling a slot vacated last summer by R. Thornton Lurie, who joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. The Bond Buyer first reported that McCarthy was in talks with Lehman two weeks ago.

McCarthy's responsibilities in the short-term arena include servicing existing accounts and structuring new underwritings. In addition, McCarthy will have regional banking coverage responsibilities for longer-term debt, though it has not yet been determined which states will be targeted.

"We are very pleased to have someone of his experience and caliber," said Killian. "It is our opinion that he is and has been the pre-eminent banker dealing with issuers who have a desire to issue shorter-term debt."

Lehman currently manages $26 billion of remarketings for issuers who sold floating-rate debt, Killian noted.

McCarthy was one of several municipal professionals let go by Merrill in October as part of a firm-wide cost-cutting drive related to international market turmoil and a decline in the company's third-quarter earnings.
