July Petroleum Demand Up 3.8% From 2009

NEW YORK – Demand for petroleum increased 3.8% in July, compared to a year ago, even as demand for gasoline slowed, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

Gasoline production rose 0.8% to 9.4 million barrels a day, up 2.2% from a year ago, as refineries were working at 87.4% capacity.

“Domestic crude oil production in July 2010 increased marginally from June of this year to 5.4 million barrels a day but fell by 0.4% from July 2009,” API said.

Crude imports rose 5.6% to 9.6 million barrels per day. Crude inventories increased 0.4% from a month ago and 2.5% from a year ago to 354.2 million barrels.
