Sales of new single-family homes increased 9.6% to a 433,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate in July, according to data released by the Commerce Department yesterday.

The July figure came after an upwardly revised climb to a 395,000 rate in June, originally reported as an 11.0% rise to 384,000. Thomson Reuters’ poll of economists had predicted a 390,000 sales level for June. Sales were 13.4% below the 500,000 rate in July 2008.
